Chief Minister Rekha Gupta's clear message against school fee hikes comes amid the Opposition's attack on the issue
Chief Minister has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards arbitrary fee hikes in schools, and any harassment of parents or students will not be tolerated, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said today.
During a public interaction, a group of parents informed the Chief Minister that their children had been expelled from Queen Mary School in Model Town after they opposed illegal fee increases. A video shared by the Chief Minister on X shows her directing an official to notify the school that its registration would be cancelled.
Chief Minister Gupta emphasized that schools cannot intimidate students or impose unreasonable fee hikes. “There are established rules and procedures that must be followed for any fee revisions. If a school is found violating these norms, it will face strict action. We will be issuing notices to all schools against which we’ve received complaints,” she told the media.
She said the Delhi government is firmly committed to transparency, equal opportunity, and the protection of children’s rights in the education sector. “Any form of injustice, exploitation, or irregularity will be dealt with under a zero-tolerance policy. Our pledge is clear — every child deserves justice, dignity, and access to quality education,” Ms. Gupta affirmed.
The Chief Minister’s strong stance against arbitrary school fee hikes comes amid allegations from the Opposition AAP, which has accused the BJP of having close ties with the Action Committee of Unaided Private Schools — a body that had previously opposed the AAP government’s crackdown on fee hikes. “Bharat Arora, president of the Association of Unaided Private Schools, is a BJP office-bearer and actively campaigned for the Chief Minister before the Assembly elections. As soon as the BJP came to power, reports of fee hikes began surfacing,” former Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged.
The BJP, however, has rejected the accusations, accusing AAP of spreading misinformation. Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva responded, “There are over 1,650 private schools in Delhi, yet the Arvind Kejriwal government could only audit 75 of them in a year. Taking advantage of this lax oversight, many private schools have significantly increased their fees.”
Mr. Sachdeva further alleged that Arvind Kejriwal, along with former ministers Saurabh Bharadwaj and Atishi, are spreading lies and creating confusion on social media. “The AAP leadership is desperately trying to construct a false narrative against the BJP in Delhi. After their misleading campaigns around the Women’s Prosperity Scheme, Ayushman Bharat, and power supply issues failed to gain traction, they’ve now shifted focus to the school fee hike issue to score political points — but this strategy, too, will fall flat,” he said.
