Mehul Choksi Arrested In Belgium

The arrest, made at the request of Indian agencies, including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), follows the issuance of non-bailable warrants against him by Mumbai courts.

The Gitanjali Group owner is accused of a Rs 13,500 crore fraud at the state-run Punjab National Bank along with his nephew, Nirav Modi, his wife, Ami Modi, and his brother, Neeshal Modi

ABOUT Mehul Choksi

Mehul Choksi, born on May 5, 1959, in Mumbai, is an Indian-born businessman and the former owner of Gitanjali Group, a major jewelry retailer in India. He is the maternal uncle of Nirav Modi. Choksi is a key accused in the ₹13,500 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, where he and his nephew allegedly used fraudulent Letters of Undertaking to secure overseas credit. In early 2018, he fled India and acquired citizenship in Antigua and Barbuda. Recently, in April 2025, Choksi was arrested in Belgium at India’s request for extradition. He had been residing in Antwerp, reportedly for medical treatment. Indian authorities are pursuing his extradition to face charges including criminal conspiracy, cheating, and money laundering.

His Nephew, also an accused in the case, is currently jail in London

On the fugitive Mehul Choksi’s arrest in Belgium, his Advocate Vijay Aggarwal says, “My client Mehul Choksi has been arrested in Belgium and at the moment, he is in custody. We will be starting the process of filing an appeal against this, and then, as part of the appeal process, we will be requesting that he be pulled out of prison. The major ground for the plea is his ill health and that he is undergoing cancer treatment…”
