“Raj Kushwaha, once considered a trusted employee, is now accused of having an affair with Sonam Raghuvanshi.”
Raja Raghuvanshi body was recovered on June 2 from a deep gorge near Wei Sawdong Falls in Sohra,
Raj Kushwaha, accused in the murder of Indore’s Raja Raghuvanshi during a honeymoon trip to Meghalaya, maintained a calm and composed demeanor, pretending to support both grieving families.
In a now-viral video, Kushwaha—an employee of Sonam Raghuvanshi’s brother—was seen consoling her father, Devi Singh, while he mourned the death of his son-in-law. Raja Raghuvanshi’s body was found in a deep gorge near Wei Sawdong Falls in Meghalaya on June 2.
Kushwaha, who allegedly had an affair with Sonam Raghuvanshi, was a trusted employee in her brother Govind’s business. When Govind traveled to Meghalaya in search of his sister and brother-in-law, he left the business in Kushwaha’s hands.
Raja’s elder brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi, who accompanied Govind to Meghalaya, said he often overheard Govind speaking to Raj on the phone.
“Govind kept saying, ‘I’ve left everything to you. Please manage the business while I’m away in Shillong,'” Vipin told The Times of India (ToI).
Vipin added that Govind had no idea that his most trusted employee could allegedly be involved in the shocking crime.
Despite the turmoil, Raj Kushwaha continued to act as a pillar of strength for the family. Just last week, he visited them and behaved as if nothing had happened.
“He came over and chatted with everyone. We had no inkling he might have been involved,” Sonam’s father told ToI.
According to police, Sonam and Raj allegedly conspired and hired contract killers to murder Raja Raghuvanshi.
However, Kushwaha’s mother insists her son is innocent and denies any romantic involvement between him and Sonam.
“My son could never kill anyone. He’s only 20. I haven’t eaten or had water for three days… He worked at Sonam’s brother’s factory, and she did too. If you work together, wouldn’t you talk? My son has been framed. I pray that God will prove his innocence,” she said.
Meanwhile, Vipin Raghuvanshi strongly criticized Sonam’s mother, accusing her of hiding information from their family and being aware of the alleged affair.
“We’re convinced there are more than five people involved. When Sonam surrendered, she told her brother someone had dropped her off. But how could she not know who those people were? Later, we found out she arrived by bus and was accompanied by two others. She staged the entire surrender,” Vipin alleged.
He added, “If Raj were innocent, why would he speak to Sonam for hours? After Raja’s murder, Sonam was found in Raj’s hometown—likely hiding at his house. During the time between the murder and the body’s discovery, Sonam and Raj were in frequent contact.
We conducted a background check before Raja married her, but we never imagined Sonam would turn out like this. Her mother kept things from us. Had her father or brother known about Raj, they would have fired him. I believe there are more than five people involved in this case.”

Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi’s honeymoon in Meghalaya took a tragic turn when Raja was found murdered, with police alleging that Sonam and her lover orchestrated the crime.
What started as a honeymoon for newlyweds Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, quickly turned into a chilling murder mystery in Meghalaya. The investigation by Meghalaya Police unfolded like a gripping crime thriller.
Here’s how the allegedly foolproof murder plot by Sonam Raghuvanshi and her lover Raj Kushwaha unraveled — and how the police uncovered the truth, step by step.
The story begins with a honeymoon
Tragic Honeymoon Turns Crime Scene: The Mysterious Murder of Raja Raghuvanshi Marriage and Travel Plans
Raja Raghuvanshi and Sonam Raghuvanshi were married on May 11, 2025, in Indore. Nine days later, on May 20, they left for their honeymoon. The couple initially planned a romantic getaway to Kashmir but changed their destination to the scenic hills of Meghalaya following reports of terror attacks in the region.
The newlyweds arrived at Mawlakhiyat village on May 22, riding a rented scooter. From there, they trekked down over 3,000 steps into the valley to visit the famous living root bridges in Nongriat village. They spent the night at a local homestay and checked out the next morning for more sightseeing.
Mysterious Disappearance
On May 23, at around 6:00 AM, the couple left their homestay on the rented scooter — but after that, they lost contact with their families. The next day, May 24, the scooter was found abandoned outside a café on the Shillong–Sohra road. A search and rescue operation was launched by the Meghalaya Police, although efforts were hindered by heavy rainfall in the region.
A Gruesome Discovery
The first major breakthrough came on June 2, when Raja Raghuvanshi’s decomposed body was discovered in a deep gorge near the Wei Sawdong waterfall. His face was unrecognizable due to decomposition, but a tattoo reading “Raja” on his hand confirmed his identity. The post-mortem revealed he had been struck twice on the head with a sharp weapon — confirming it was a case of murder.
Clues and Evidence
On June 4, police found further evidence at the scene: a woman’s white shirt, a strip of medicine, a broken mobile phone screen, and a smartwatch. These items strengthened suspicions of foul play, and a case of homicide was officially registered.
The Murder Plot Uncovered
Indore’s Additional Commissioner of Police, Rajesh Dandotiya, revealed that the murder was premeditated. Raj Kushwaha, 20, who was in a relationship with Sonam, allegedly plotted Raja’s murder on May 18 — just a week after the wedding. He hired three accomplices: Vishal Chauhan, Anand Kumar, and Akash Rajput.
Sonam, fully involved in the plan, convinced Raja to go on a honeymoon to Meghalaya. They left Indore on May 20.
A Fatal Mistake
The investigation took a decisive turn when the murder weapon — a machete — was recovered. A senior Meghalaya Police officer said, “This type of machete is uncommon in this region, which led us to suspect outside involvement. We then began tracing the couple’s call records.”
The analysis revealed that Sonam had contacted one of the hired killers just days before the murder. Her last known location before going missing was also in proximity to that individual.
Arrest and Confession
Sonam was eventually located at ‘Kashi Dhaba’ on the Varanasi–Ghazipur highway, where she had asked a staff member for a phone to contact her parents in Indore. This led Madhya Pradesh Police to trace her location and inform the Uttar Pradesh Police. She was taken into custody after reportedly surrendering at the Nandganj police station in Ghazipur district. Before her transfer, she received medical aid and was placed at a one-stop centre for women in distress.
Meanwhile, the police arrested the other suspects: Akash Rajput was apprehended from Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh; Vishal Chauhan from Indore, Madhya Pradesh; and Raj Kushwaha, the mastermind, also from Indore.
East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem confirmed their arrests during a press briefing in Shillong.
